by Kevin Harris
For too long, the Holy Spirit has been sidelined. Many believers treat Him as an abstract force, a theological debate, or something only for pastors, prophets, or spiritually elite. If you feel like the Spirit's transforming power is mystical, confusing, or just out of your reach, you are not alone.
This spiritual confusion is a tragic mistake. The Holy Spirit is God's active, personal presence in your life—the very source of your new creation in Christ. He is the one who initiates, sustains, and secures your life in Jesus. He plants the very character of Christ within you and gives you the power that you need to accomplish God's work in this world.
In this unique guide, Kevin Harris pulls back the curtain on this vital Person of the Godhead. Weaving clear, biblical teaching with powerful, detailed personal stories and insights from C.S. Lewis, Martin Luther, and others, Harris cuts through the confusion.
This book shows you that the Spirit is not a distant reality, but a divine Person, who is already working right now to build Christian character in you.
In this book, you will find the roadmap to move:
from knowledge to intimacy
from striving to surrender
from assurance to action
The Work of the Holy Spirit is structured to bring clarity and depth to every aspect of your walk:
Gain Unshakeable Assurance: Stop wondering if you’ve done enough. Understand the Spirit's decisive work in your salvation, and how His continuous witness to Truth will free you forever from a performance-based faith.
Cultivate Christ-like Character: Learn how He acts as the life-giving sap that flows through you, empowering you to bear the supernatural fruit of the Spirit—joy, peace, and love—even in the midst of trials and spiritual warfare that rages around you.
Step into Your Purpose: Find practical guidance for service and witness as the Divine Guide equips you with power and spiritual gifts for the mission He has for you.

I recall one Saturday night, when my mother was working with me on my Cub Scout memory work. She was helping me to remember the prayer. I remember her asking me on several occasions if I understood this or that. She always asked me if I understood the sections about faith in God.
I knew what she was after when that line of questions came up. We were a church-going family. In fact, we were a ministry family, always in church. I was an expert Sunday School student. I knew all the Sunday School answers, but I had not yet decided to take Jesus Christ as my Lord. I was resistant to the gospel call for salvation. I can recall that I knew about Christ, but I was not sure I was ready to dedicate myself to Christ and His ways. My mother and I had been through this conversation before, and I had skillfully dodged her questions on several occasions. However, that particular Saturday night my mother was persistent. she pressed me with her questions. I can still feel my discomfort as she went beyond her normal line of questioning. I did not want to commit myself to Jesus Christ and accept His salvation. Yet, she did not let me off easily. I wanted to keep on going down the path I had been on. I knew that a choice for Christ meant I would have to give up some control over myself.
I do not know what my mother said during those moments of my anguish, but I do remember the feeling of great internal conflict. I can recall feeling as if there were a battle taking place in my mind. I imagined there was a black dog and a white dog fighting within me for my very soul. With great anguish at last I relented of my own autonomy and gave myself to Christ. I placed my faith in Him and confessed my belief in Him, repenting for my selfish resistance.
Salvation is a divine act of mercy. We cannot act nice enough or good enough or be smart enough to earn salvation. We cannot reason or think our way to salvation. Science and philosophy will never save us. Because salvation from the death of an eternal separation from God cannot be won by our own works or knowledge. We cannot earn righteousness. We cannot regenerate ourselves to earn God’s favor. Righteousness and regeneration come from God alone.
As a boy, I thought I was losing something by giving up on control of my own being. But look at all that I gained by choosing to put myself in the care of the Creator of the universe. God had marked me for one of His own and had sent His Spirit to collect my soul and mark me as one of His own. He used the imploring words of my mother to break my will and convict me of my sinful ways. As I recognized my place before God, I relented to His will and repented of my sin and accepted Christ as my savior.
